Harnessing Energy Efficiency was the first side session following the Clean Energy Summit, aiming to highlight and discuss the significance of energy efficiency in Cambodia—a strategy often regarded as the low-hanging fruit for reducing energy consumption and minimising environmental impact.
The session brought together over 100 participants and began with expert presentations from Dr. Kinnaleth Vongchanh of the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), Mr. Mahfuzur Rahman of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Cambodia, and Dr. Sopheak Rey of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). These presentations were then followed by a panel discussion featuring the three presenters alongside Ms. Mola Tin of Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) and Ms. Eliane Jarry of Group for the Environment, Renewable Energy and Solidarity (GERES), allowing for a dynamic exchange of ideas and practical insights.
There is a growing momentum for energy efficiency in Cambodia as the country commits to achieving 19% energy reduction by 2030 through its National Energy Efficiency Policy (NEEP). Throughout the session, experts emphasised the importance of balancing energy efficiency with economic profitability. For instance, Mr. Mahfuzur Rahman highlighted that financially feasible measures are key to encouraging wider adoption of energy-saving practices. Similarly, Ms. Mola Tin from CAPRED pointed to the strong potential of implementing the Energy Service Company (ESCO) model to accelerate energy efficiency projects. In addition, Dr. Kinnaleth Vongchanh noted the rollout of certified training programs for energy professionals, while Dr. Sopheak Rey underscored the concept of Eco-Industrial Park (EIP) and the value of converting agricultural waste into useful products. Finally, Ms. Eliane Jarry stressed that energy efficiency is crucial not only for competitiveness but also for long-term sustainability.
To close the session, our Clean Energy Policy Manager, Mr. Mardy Huot, presented and officially launched the
Clean Energy Progress Report 2024—our inaugural report mapping Cambodia’s evolving energy landscape, with a particular focus on clean energy and energy efficiency. The report is organised into three key sections:
- Part 1: Tracking Cambodia’s clean energy journey
- Part 2: Balancing promises and complexities
- Part 3: Unlocking energy efficiency in Cambodia
This report provides a valuable reference for understanding the current state of Cambodia’s clean energy and energy efficiency sectors, showcasing the progress achieved so far and highlighting the pathway toward a sustainable energy future.
