Waste Summit 2025

EnergyLab Asia was honoured to take part in the Waste Summit 2025, held in Siem Reap on 24–25 October. The event brought together key stakeholders to explore innovative solutions in waste management, circular economy, sustainable supply chains, and inclusive business models.

In a breakout session, our Clean Energy Policy Manager, Mr. Mardy Huot, shared key insights from EnergyLab’s End-of-Life Clean Energy Waste Management Report. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion featuring Mr. Sophal Laska, Director of Hazardous Substance Management at the Ministry of Environment; Mr. Andy Chun, Country Director of VeryWords Cambodia; and Mr. Peter Olorundimu, CEO of Harvest Recycling. The session was moderated by our Policy Coordinator, Ms. Sreyleak Phon.

As highlighted in the discussion, waste is value waiting to be unlocked. Effective management of electronic and clean energy waste not only mitigates environmental and social impacts but also generates new economic opportunities.

While the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) is embracing clean energy (CE) for the country’s energy security, economic development and competitiveness, waste from CE technologies will become another significant stream of E-waste to handle.

With Cambodia’s commitment to have at least 70% of clean energy and 770,000 units of EV on the road by 2030, CE-waste will increase significantly from just 1.8% of the total E-waste today to between 7% and 9.5% by 2050.

Despite the concerning amount of CE-waste in the future, the environmental, social, and economic benefits of the clean energy transition far outweigh its negative impacts. Therefore, CE-waste growth should not be the reason to slow down the clean energy transition, but early preparation is required so our “green” effort does not become “grey” for the next generation.

We greatly appreciate the organisers for hosting such a wonderful and impactful event.
